Online Yoga 50, 60 or 70

I started practicing yoga in my 30s. It started out as a way to not only to get some exercise but also to escape from my young kids for a few minutes. I was able to put my kids in child care at the local gym. I got the chance to do something good for myself plus I could get that mental & emotional break from my kids that I needed. I’m very grateful that I stumbled upon that first yoga class so many years ago. Yes, starting yoga in your 30s is awesome, but I wouldn’t hesitate to tell anyone else to start online yoga; 50 years old isn’t too old!

How do you get started?

Well, first you need to know what your goals are. Do you want to build strength? How about increase your flexibility? Would you like to improve your balance? Do you have an injury that you need to work around and perhaps recover from? Or, maybe you would like to learn about meditation or breathwork in order to ease your anxiety.

These are all great questions to ask yourself before you look for online yoga. Knowing what you want out of your practice will help you to choose a routine that will be able to support you as you continue to age.

Find a teacher that matches you!

Not all yoga teachers are created equeal.

I’ve been teaching yoga for almost 15 years now. I am not the same teacher that I was when I first got started. I’m wiser & more skilled. I understand much better how your body moves and what works & doesn’t work.

Not all yoga teachers have the same skills and talents. We’ve all received different sets of trainings. Thus, we are not all a good fit for everyone. Find a yoga teacher that is willing to work with your goals and/or limitations.

About me…

I adore working with women who are new to yoga.

I also love to help you feel better in your body and move with more ease as you go about your day. I get most excited when you tell me that you can get off of the floor easier or you can go on that hike with your kids or grandkids & still feel good the next day.

I’m not nearly as interested in helping you to sculpt your abs into a 6 pack or getting you beach body ready. If that is what you seek, then you need to find someone else to help you in your online yoga routine.

I help you live happier and healthier. I just happen to be a yoga therapist and use yoga to help you do that in ways that fit your goals and needs.

Online Yoga: 50 isn’t too old to start!

Are you still moving? Are you still breathing? Has your doctor told you that adding more exercise into your routine would be helpful?

As long as your doctor approves of you adding exercise into your life, then 50 is NOT too late to start!

I tell my clients all of the time that adding some simple yoga movements into your day can help you to prevent the decline of your body as you age. The thing is though that by adding in an online yoga practice you can do so much more than simply prevent decline.

I’ve seen clients grow stronger than they have been in years. They’ve regained flexibility that they thought was long gone. They’ve improved balance and found peace that has eluded them for years.

This is less about age & more about actually doing the thing which in this case happens to be yoga. I’ve worked with clients in their 80s who can still do a split. I am in awe of their determination as well as their dedication to continuing to improve on their own health & well being.

So, ask yourself this…are you still moving & breathing? Or, do you have someone in your life that this describes? If the answer is yes to either of these, then online yoga 50, 60, or 70 years of age is not too late to get started.

You’re not the same as you used to be!

You’re body isn’t that same as it was when you were in your 20s, 30s or even your 40s. Let’s just acknowledge that now. That doesn’t mean that you can’t live happy & healthy though. What it does mean is that you sometimes need to make adjustments to accommodate all of the life that you’ve experienced already.

I for one am glad that I’m not in my 20s or 30s anymore. I’ve shifted my yoga practice to fit me in this stage of life and you can do that too!

Accept where you are now in life & then you have choices around what you want to do with what you currently have.

Get a customized practice!

In order to get the most benefits from your online yoga practice, you need to get one that is customized to your needs, desires and goals. Some of my clients need a lot of support with anxiety. For them a restorative yoga sequence is really helpful. Maybe, you’ve heard about mindfulness and would like to bring meditation into your life. (Check out my video on meditation and it’s benefits if you’re curious about what meditation can do for you.) Or, perhaps you’d like to regain some of the strength that you had when your were in your 30s & 40s.

Each of these goals is wonderful but one yoga practice will not cover all of them equally.

So, whether you work with someone in person or choose an online yoga practice, decide what your goals are & then find someone who can customize your practice to meet those goals.

Online vs. In-Person

Finally, just a word or two about online vs. in-person. Both are really great options. Right now though the biggest difference is that you can continue an online practice even while the world is dealing with a pandemic. I work with women who aren’t ready, for one reason or another, to come back to an in-person session.

I get it.

This pandemic has shifted life for everyone. Some people have pre-existing health issues that make it safer to stay home as much as possible. That doesn’t have to stop you from starting online yoga 50 or older. The key is to decide that you want to do it & then find someone who can safely help you to practice in this way.

It can be done.

Reach out to me if you’d like to chat about what an online yoga practice might look like for you. Together we can create a healthier version of you.
