Be consistent in life

When thinking about making a change in my life, I can get stuck.  The fear of making that change can keep me from moving forward in my life.  When this is happening, it feels like I’m paralyzed and unable to take action.  This is especially true if the change is related to a past trauma in some way. In times like this, I try to remind myself. that slow and steady action will help me achieve the change that I seek. I’ve learned to be consistent in life so that I continue to move forward towards my goals.

It takes time to change your life.

Despite what so many of us would like to have happen, making a change in your life is normally not a one step process and then you’re done.  Usually there are either multiple steps that you need to take or one step that needs to be taken over and over again in order to create change in your life.

To create the change that you seek you’ll have to take steps to achieve it.  Luckily, those steps don’t have to be perfect, but they do need to be taken.  You have to create some sort of momentum in order to create change.  Those consistent, baby steps that seem so minor in the moment are actually helping you to create momentum and to move you in the direction that you want to go. Do enough of them and you will start to see change happening.

When you learn to be consistent in life, you are creating the changes that you seek. Just give it time so that you can see the results!

Change is a process

Taking steps keeps you moving in that process.

The path that you take to reach your goal may not be one that you expect.  You may find that those steps take you on a winding path towards your goal instead of a direct route.  That’s okay because you’re still moving towards your goal.

Sometimes I say to myself…It’s not what I do, it’s that I do. This means, the particular step that I take isn’t always that important. Rather, it’s the taking action itself that makes the difference. This action done consistently is key to changing your life.

I sometimes feel like I’ll never get to wherever it is that I’m going.  I feel like I’m not making the right choices or that I’m not doing the right things.  Then, I remember that this is a process of change.  It’s not just one change and done.  As long as I keep taking action even if it turns out to be the not so right action, I’m still moving forward.  I learn from those imperfect and not so right actions and I still gain from them.

So, everything that I do is taking me towards my goals in some way or another.  This is my reminder to myself that it’s not what I do that matters sometimes.  It’s simply that I take action.

Past Trauma can make change even harder!

One of the main responses to trauma is the Freeze response. When this happens, you can get stuck in unhealthy patterns for days, months, or even years. To create a shift from these unhealthy patterns can be incredibly difficult. Especially if you don’t have support for the shifts to new patterns.

If this is you, then where do you start?

You’re going to start small. Take a first step that is something different than you normally do and will start you on the path towards your goals. Then you do that step over and over again. Consistently. When you’re ready, you can add in another small shift and of course do that consistently as well.

In addition, add support for yourself in some way. Maybe it’s allowing a trusted friend to be witness to your new journey. Even better would be to have a therapist helping your through the process.

Allowing yourself to have that support will make you much more likely to create the changes you need so that you can achieve your goals.

You can be consistent in life too!

Have you noticed a resistance to taking that first step forward?  What is it that holds you back from taking that step?  Do you need accountability?  Do you need ideas or permission to try something that might or might not work?

Let me just say you don’t need permission from anyone else.  You can take that first step forward on the path toward your goals.  Your future self is waiting.  Take that first step, be consistent in life & get that much closer to your goals.

A reminder: it’s not always what you do, it’s that you do something.
