Life has a funny way of throwing us off course, leaving us feeling like someone else is pulling the strings and directing our every move. We find ourselves caught between multiple passions, juggling endless goals, and struggling to find the balance between it all. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, questioning our choices and feeling as though we’ve lost control. But amidst the chaos, there is a simple yet profound solution: take one step forward. This gentle reminder serves as a beacon of hope, guiding us towards our true desires, one small action at a time. So, amidst the hustle and bustle of life, let’s explore the power of that one step forward and uncover the path that leads us to where we truly want to be.

Too much to do and feeling overwhelmed

You can’t do it all at the same time.

Over the last month or so, I’ve felt like someone else is directing my life.  I have this image (I admit it’s probably not quite realistic) of what I want to do.  The problem is that I’m multi-passionate & I like to do many different things. 

So, what happens is that I start down one path and then I remember something else that I want to do and add it back into my life.  Pretty soon, I’ve overbooked myself, yet again.  I’ve forgotten to give myself time to rest and restore, and I feel a bit like someone else is directing my life all over again.

Well, that someone else is actually me not doing a good job selecting and scheduling my own activities.  That’s hard to accept most of the time.  I’ve done this to myself.  What was I thinking?  Or, why didn’t I think this through? Those are the questions that I’ve asked myself way too many times.

Does this sound familiar to you?

So many interests.  So many goals.  So many things that I want to cram into a 24 hour day.  And then, just for fun add in something like ants all over a room in my house and I now need to clean it out.  All of this combined brings about that feeling of overwhelm as I try to get it all done at once.

This is just life sometimes.

Things happen that weren’t in the plan.  When this happens, I can still move forward.  I simply need to adjust my plan.

When all of this is going on, its the perfect time to remind myself that I may not get everything done that I want to get done.  If I just take a step forward, then I will move closer towards my goals.  That’s what I have to recognize most!

The real question here is…What do I really need to do in order to move myself that one step closer to any one of my goals?

Take just one step forward today

In this instance, the step I first needed to take was 15 minutes in the room with the ants to figure out what was attracting them.  Only after I did that could I focus and take an hour to work on a project that is important to me.  I could next shift my focus to take 30 minutes to exercise so that I’m taking care of myself today too.

One step forward at a time. 

That’s all that I have to do in life to move forward towards my goals.  It’s more simple than I let myself believe sometimes.  I don’t have to figure the rest of my life out tonight.  I don’t have to read all of the things or create all of the things right now.  There is time for it all.  I simply need to give myself the space to get to where I want to go one step at a time.

Connect inward and reduce your stress and anxiety.

Taking away the urgency to finish everything right now, let’s me breathe a bit deeper.  I’m less stressed and I can take care of me.  I can check in with my own body to see if some of these things really are that important.  When I do, I’m sure I’ll find that some of them I can probably let go and not do.  That will make life even simpler.  It’s a matter of prioritizing what I want to move towards rather than trying to do it all at the same time.

Take a break and take a bath to destress and unwind.

When I give myself the time to stop, breathe and feel, I give myself the chance to notice what’s happening, choose my next step & then decide how I’m going to take that step. 

So, that’s what I’ve been doing the last few days.  Observing the overwhelm in my life, prioritizing and taking action.  I’m not going to get out of this with one meditation session, but if I give myself the time to stop and listen inward in a meditation session, then I can at least begin to see my path again.

One step forward on my path is all I need to do today.  I’ll keep saying that as often as is necessary to remind myself how true that is.
