Individual or Groups?

One of the things that I love about my business is that I get to work individually with people.  Before I started studying yoga therapy, I primarily taught group yoga classes with an occasional private session.  I love the energy of teaching groups.  I definitely don’t want to give that up.  However, I really love working individually with people as well.

So, there’s the part of me that loves working in a group whether it’s yoga or yoga therapy.  There’s also the part of me that is continually drawn to personalizing a practice or working 1×1 in therapy to really get to the root cause of an issue.  I find myself going back and forth between these two parts of myself and that’s okay because they both live inside of me.  Over the years, they’ve learned to coexist happily.

If you have multiple passions, then you know what I’m talking about.

My current focus…

Lately, I’ve been focusing more on my 1×1 work with people.  Specifically, I’ve been designing individual yoga practices for people.

Some of my clients have decided not to go to the gym right now because of Covid-19.  Some of my clients have a unique challenge that they want to work around or deal with.  And, some of them are recovering from an illness and need support as they begin to move their body with ease again.

What connects all of these clients is that they are seeking a practice that is unique to them.  They all recognize that they need to make some changes.  They all know that they want to bring yoga into their lives in order to create those changes.  They also know that in a group setting, they won’t get to customize the routine in a way that really fits them.

Sometimes you need an individual approach.

This individual approach to their fitness in mind and body is near and dear to my heart.

So, often we hear about this fad diet or exercise that will change your life forever.  ‘It’s the only exercise that you ever need to do or food that you need to eat.  Plus, it works for everybody.’  These types of ads and claims usually make me run in the opposite direction.

You are unique!

You are all different!  Let me say that again.  You are all different!  You each have unique challenges, habits and strengths.  Sometimes, you need solutions that are aimed at just you.  This doesn’t mean that you have to give up group classes or solutions that are aimed at multiple groups of people.  What it does mean is that you need to listen to your own body.  When it’s telling you that you need something unique to fit just you, then listen to it.

In regards to your yoga practice, that means don’t be afraid to practice on your own.  Practice the poses that feel right for you in the moment and not just what someone else tells you to do.

When I customize a practice, I spend time asking about your injuries and your goals.  I also spend time watching how your body moves and finding out how the movements feel for you.  With all of that information, then we can begin to narrow down what your own unique practice will be.

This isn’t a one size fits all solution.  It’s a get to know you and work with you and only you solution.

You can do this by working with someone like myself.  You can also do this on your own by reading what your body needs and wants and then creating something that fills your body’s need.

Listen to your body more often.

My goal for my private clients is just that.

I want you to get to know how your own body feels and moves so that you can know what you need from day to day.  Being able to listen to your body in this way does take practice, but over time it does get easier and easier.  Eventually you’re creating your own unique yoga practice all by yourself.

Your body might be telling you that you need to rest and do some easier, gentler yoga poses.  Or, your body might be telling you that you need to hold some challenging poses today.  Of course, your body might also tell you that it’s time to get yourself into a yoga class because you need to be surrounded by the energy of others.

You’ll never know what message that your body is sending until you begin to listen to it.

Listening to the messages that your body is giving to you is an incredible gift that you can give to yourself.  I simply love teaching people how to get to the point where they can listen inward and create their own yoga practice!

You can get there too!  It’s just going to take some time and practice.

I’d love to hear about your unique practice.  Leave a comment or send me a message to share it.  And, if you’d like to have these weekly blog posts come right into your inbox, then sign up for my newsletter here.
