Practice awareness more often.

Have you ever felt like you’re floating, untethered, adrift in a sea of anxieties? If we’re honest, most of us will say yes to this at one time or another. I felt like this for awhile last week as well. My mind raced, my body felt tense, and the usual joy of life seemed muted. But then, I took a stand (literally!). I went barefoot in the grass, soaked in the sun’s warmth, and embraced the grounding power of essential oils. It was a simple act, yet it shifted my entire weekend – and sparked something much bigger. This wasn’t just about feeling good; it was about making a conscious choice to alleviate anxiety and cultivate true relaxation.

This experience got me thinking about the power of awareness in creating change. If you’re not aware of where you are, how can you chart a new course? I’m talking about the concept of awareness and how it can be your key to unlocking positive shifts in your life. Let’s explore the connection between body and mind, and discover the simple power of “checking in” with yourself. You’ll learn to listen to your body, make empowered choices, and ground yourself in the present moment. Are you ready to step onto the path of change? Let’s begin!

You can create conscious change in your life.

I often write about awareness being so important if you’re wanting to make a shift or a change in your life.  That’s because if you’re not aware of where you are right now, then how can you know what choices to make in order to get somewhere else?  The answer is that you can’t.  You have to know where you’re starting before you can make a shift.

On a recent Saturday, I was aware that I was feeling ungrounded.  This can lead to even more anxiety and that’s not something that I wanted.  As I was aware of that sensation of not being grounded, then I had the choice to be more grounded and have less anxiety or I could stay ungrounded and watch my anxiety increase.

This was an easy choice to make and I made it a priority to ground myself again.

How did I do it?

I went outside and stood barefoot in the grass.  I stood in the sun and enjoyed its rays.  I also diffused essential oils that were grounding and rested when I needed it.  These grounding practices were part of my choice that weekend to alleviate anxiety & be more relaxed.

This simple choice to make a change in my surroundings made a big difference in how I felt!

Awareness.  It all starts there!

Most people go through their life living from their minds. We often don’t take into consideration how our body is feeling or the wisdom that’s retained in our bodies. Does that sound familiar? I know that’s often true for me and I see it with most of my clients as well. Too often, I get stuck in my thinking mind & ignore my body and what it has to tell me.  Usually, it’s not a helpful way to go through life!

This pattern of ignoring our bodies and what they have to say starts early in life. How many children are told to not cry when they fall down, even when the fall obviously caused pain? What message is that sending to the child?

If you’re an athlete, then you’re encouraged to push beyond the pain. In other word’s ignore your body’s messages to stop so that you can achieve a faster speed, better accuracy or more consistency. In so many ways, we’re taught to ignore our bodies or to work through the pain.  The saying ‘No pain, No gain” is a great example of this.

Yes, there are times when it’s appropriate to ignore the messages of your body. When you need to flee a situation for safety reasons, then you’ll want to do so no matter how much pain you’re in.

Fortunately, this isn’t the case most of the time! Normally, you do have the time to stop & notice your body.

But, do you take the time?

With so much social conditioning in ignoring our bodies, it’s not surprising that most of us don’t take the time to notice what our bodies are saying.

Here’s an example.

As I write this, I know that I’ve been sitting for too long and my body is asking to get up and move a bit.  Since I want to get this done and don’t want to stop before I do, I’ll keep working.  Thus, my mind is overriding my body’s needs.

Now, imagine doing this hour after hour, day after day.   Slowly your awareness muscle is getting weaker and weaker.  Your body has to speak louder and louder in order to be heard.  Maybe that explains that ache that just gets worse and worse in your body the longer you try to ignore it?

If you stop to listen to what your body’s trying to tell you, then you might hear the quieter nudges to move or make a change. If you don’t, your body will get louder and louder until you simply can’t ignore it any longer.

Awareness is a practice.

Check in more often

Checking in with your body can be as simple as stopping what you’re doing for just a few moments.

Try this. Take a deep breath & notice what is happening.  How does your body feel in whatever position that you are in?  What do you smell, see & hear?  What do you notice in your arms, legs & back.  Notice what is happening inside you as well as around you.  Become aware of your present moment.

This is what I practiced on that Saturday.  When I got up that morning and checked in with how I was feeling in my body, I could tell that I wasn’t grounded.  I knew that I would feel less anxious and more at ease with just a few tweaks to my day.

It can be as simple as that to make a change in your life.

Stop.  Notice what is happening & make any adjustments that you like or need.

When you practice awareness, then it does get easier.  It’s like a muscle that you have to use in order to make it stronger or more flexible.  It’s a skill that you have to use on a regular basis or it will get rusty. Awareness can lead you to make the changes that will make your life even better. If you’ve spent so long ignoring your body’s cues that you can’t even begin to practice awareness, then let’s talk. And remember, it’s never too late to live healthier & happier. It just takes one small change at a time!
